The Finding: a Sicilian western made with AI

A dialogue-free fable of buried treasure, faith and superstition, set in the Sicily of the trovatura legend. There is no live-action footage: images, video and audio are generated, while direction, editing and post-production are done by hand. The film has already collected awards and selections at international AI film festivals.

The AI had generated excellent sound design, but it was often inconsistent from one scene to the next: levels that didn't relate to each other and elements nobody had asked for. On top of that, everything arrived as a single stereo MP3 of average quality. The hard part was separating the elements enough to actually mix them, and raising the sound quality of the whole. I then delivered the mix in four formats: stereo for the web, 5.1 for cinema, Dolby Atmos and binaural. The tools generate; the ear decides.

Agente Speciale Legs Weaver: adult animation for Rai Kids

Bonelli's first animated series made for an adult audience: Legs Weaver, from the Nathan Never universe, in an action adventure full of irony, with the heroine talking straight to the viewer. The fun part of sound design in stories like this is creating sounds that don't exist from nothing: the monsters, the weapons, the flying motorbikes. Above all, it is one of the rare times a director told me to overdo it.

Art Raiders: the sound of an animated noir

A series on tomb raiders and stolen antiquities, mixing interviews filmed at excavation sites and museums, studio reconstructions and noir-style animated illustrations. I gave each register its own sound and held them together in the mix, so the move from interview to animation never jumps out. The animations recreate the action scenes described by the investigators, and the ambiences, Foley and sound design add the layer of action that this kind of animation could otherwise lack.

Il Rinascimento nascosto: a documentary that travelled

A documentary on African and Afro-descendant people in Italian Renaissance art, with costume reconstructions and animated graphics. Released in Italy, the UK and Germany, it has been screened at universities in the US and Canada as The Black Italian Renaissance. The challenge was a sound design that sat between the realism of Foley and ethereal textures blending with the original score by Alain Diamond and Victor Kwality.

Partiti!: animation for a news channel

Five satirical cartoons on the history of Italy's main political parties, featured in two Sky TG24 specials. In animation every sound starts from scratch, here on a news channel's tight schedule. The challenge was finding a level of sonic comedy that respected the project's impartiality.

Casa Leopardi Museum: designing the sound of a room

An immersive room recreating Giacomo Leopardi's life and home, with projections across three walls and about 12 metres. Beyond sound design and mixing, I designed the audio system: a 4.1 quadraphonic setup that surrounds visitors along with the images. The sound follows every movement projected on the walls, with Foley built to respect the sounds of the period.
